A recipe for restoring wicker calls for boiled linseed oil and turpentine. Can I use paint thinner instead?

NanaP asked:

I am restoring my old wicker and rattan chairs. A recipe calls for 1/3 turpentine and 2/3 boiled linseed oil. I have paint thinner and want to know if I can use that instead of turps.
