What do you paint a large wicker basket with & how?

I have a large/wide 2′ 7″ wicker basket my x-bf bought me in mexico that is in a natural light color with a slight shine to it & would like to color it a rich brown-red color like my other bedroom furniture. Have no idea what will stick on this material permanently. Can I do this myself? What to do?

      The primer on and they look great and the primer on top of it have done this with wicker chairs and they look great and can.
